Reduced levels of estrogen can cause vaginal dryness. When hormone levels are reduced, so is the amount of vaginal fluid secreted. This, combined with other hormonal effects such as an altered vaginal PH, reduced blood flow to the vaginal tissues and changes to the lining of the vagina, or 'epithelium', can result in discomfort such as burning and itching.
